The back brooch fitting is typically Victorian. It has a nice tight hinge and the fittings are good. Bought as silver. You can just tell it's silver when you work with the metal.

Believed to be an English piece as the decoration is very 'English' rather than Indian, despite the item being that of an Indian style elephant. The elements like the 'scales' and the 'scrolls' are just very English in design.

It is pressed silver but it hasn't been over polished so there aren't any significant wear issues. It is a nice heavy gauge and well made. Wear consistent with age and use. I haven't cleaned it but kept it in an airtight container, so there is a small amount of tarnish.
