VICTORIAN Exquisite Silk Wedding Shoes IMPORTANT London Maker Henry Marshall

VICTORIAN Exquisite Silk Wedding Shoes IMPORTANT London Maker Henry Marshall

Victorian 19th century silk satin wedding shoes by Henry Marshall - late Pattinson. In ivory coloured satin silk with pink Georgian style heels. These measure 23cm in length - there is some degradation of the fabric but they are utterly gorgeous and I've enjoyed owning them! I've kept them in acid free tissue and they need to be further conserved.

The Maker: The label identifies the bootmaker as Henry Marshall, who took over from Pattison. He was a prestigious London bootmaker located at 74 Oxford Street.
Royal Connection: The label lists a series of high-profile Royal Warrants, stating the maker served H.R.H. Duchess of Edinburgh, H.R.H. Princess Louis of Hesse, and H.R.H. Princess Christian. These were daughters and a daughter-in-law of Queen Victoria, placing the production of these shoes firmly in the Victorian era.
Construction: These shoes are made of ivory and pink silk satin with leather soles and kid leather inners. Before the mid-19th century, shoes were often "straights," meaning there was no difference between the left and right foot.
Use: Similar slippers from this period were used as wedding shoes or dancing slippers for formal balls and court presentations.

If you search online for The Powerhouse collection there are similar historical examples - this is a museum collection that contains nearly identical pairs by Henry Marshall. The Powerhouse Collection is part of a significant collection of historical footwear initiated by the famous London shoemaker Joseph Box. These will be packed with the utmost care for travel in the post.
